The Challenge

A large-scale household survey covering major provinces of Turkey was required to assess living conditions, income distribution, and social indicators as part of a national statistical program. The survey demanded multilingual surveyors fluent in Turkish, Kurdish, and Arabic to effectively reach diverse populations across the country. Access to both dense urban neighborhoods in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir as well as remote rural communities in Eastern Anatolia posed significant logistical challenges. The project required strict adherence to international statistical standards and a robust quality assurance framework to ensure data would be accepted by international bodies including the World Bank and Eurostat.

Our Solution

Ginger Research deployed 280 CAPI surveyors from our Istanbul office, partnering with local universities across key regions for surveyor recruitment and specialized training on household survey methodology. We implemented a three-stage quality assurance process incorporating GPS verification of household visits, automated consistency checks on collected data, and independent back-check interviews covering 12% of completed households. The survey was conducted in Turkish, Kurdish, and Arabic using culturally adapted questionnaires validated through extensive cognitive testing. Over an 8-month fieldwork period, teams completed 18,000 household interviews using a stratified multi-stage cluster sampling design that ensured representativeness at the provincial level.

Results

  • Completed 18,000 household interviews with 91% response rate
  • Covered major provinces including Eastern Anatolia regions
  • Data contributed to Turkey's official poverty and inequality statistics
  • Recognized by World Bank as a model implementation for household survey methodology
